Carpet Vs Wood Flooring In Singapore

Buying a new home in Singapore is the start of a long list of home projects to embark on. You need to decide on an interior decor based on a theme that you like. This may involve repainting your home, both inside and out. Then you have to visit an appliance store and a furniture shop to fully furnish your home, making it a very comfortable place to live in. Finally, you have to repair any damages or replace some parts of the house, especially if you bought a second-hand home. One thing that most new homeowners change is the flooring. Some prefer the elegant finish a hard wood floor exudes, while some go for comfort and warmth, which is why they cover their floors with carpets. If you are still torn between carpet and wood flooring for your home in Singapore, the pros and cons laid out here may be able to help you decide.

Carpet Flooring

-Pros
The best advantage of carpet flooring is the comfort it provides. You can walk barefoot at home comfortably because of the soft texture under your foot. It also offers safety. The risk of slipping is reduced with carpeted floors, and if you should ever fall, it will provide enough cushion to prevent injuries.

A carpeted floor is also a good insulator for both noise and temperature. Winter days will not be as cold if you have carpet flooring, which can reduce your heating expenses.

In terms of aesthetics, carpets are now available in various colors and prints, so you can easily find one that will match your interior design and theme.

-Cons
Carpets have shorter life span compared to wood, especially if they are placed in a room with heavy traffic. The fibers will become worn in time and threads can get pulled. Another disadvantage is that carpets collect dusts and they can easily become soiled. Thus, you have to allot more time vacuuming carpets to maintain a germ-free environment inside your home.

Wood Flooring

-Pros
Wood is a natural and sustainable material, making it perfect for those who are gearing toward making their homes green. It is even better if you choose recycled wood because you will further be helping the environment and still enjoy the rustic and classic beauty of old wood.

Wood flooring is easily maintained and cleaned. Smooth wooden floors do not collect much dust, so occasional sweeping or mopping is enough. If the floor should become damaged, there is also no need to replace the entire floor. The damaged area can be sanded and refinished to make it look as good as new. Wood flooring is also durable, so the initial cost of installing it can be offset by its longer life span.

-Cons
Wood flooring will cost you more to install. It is also vulnerable to damages due to water spills and leaks. Another disadvantage of wood flooring is that it may emit toxic chemicals from the sealants and finishes that were used to treat the wood, which is why you need to make sure that the wood you buy passes quality requirements.

These basic advantages and disadvantages of each material can be your basis when installing new flooring. Do remember that you can use both materials strategically in the different rooms in your house. As a tip, you can use carpet where you want comfort and wood in areas where you want style.
